What we do

One crew for your whole property's trees

From a single limb over the roof to a full removal and replant, we prune, remove and care for every tree, all under one roof. Every service below carries the same quality promise.

The honest call

Prune, treat, brace, or remove?

The saw is the last answer, not the first. Here is how the call actually gets made in your yard, so you can hear the difference when someone quotes you.

Prune

Most trees just need editing.

When
Deadwood, rubbing limbs, roof clearance, storm-thinning
Gains
Light, airflow, safer structure for decades

Timing matters by species, and “topping” is never pruning. If someone offers to top your tree, close the door.

Treat

Sick is not the same as done.

When
Early leaf drop, fungus at the base, borer holes, thinning crown
Gains
Caught early, many trees recover fully

Diagnosis before quotes. A look at the whole tree, roots to crown, beats a guess from the driveway.

Brace

Support beats surrender.

When
Split forks, heavy leaders over targets, storm-cracked unions
Gains
Cables and rods keep good trees standing for years

Not every split tree is finished. Bracing costs a fraction of removal, when the wood is still sound.

Remove

Sometimes it has to go.

When
Mostly dead crown, trunk decay, roots heaving, target it can hit
Gains
Done right: controlled, insured, cleaned up same day

If the first answer to every tree is the saw, get a second opinion. Removal is our last recommendation, not our sales pitch.

Your clear quote

Climbing, cutting, chipping and haul-away, one line, one price. Approved by you before anything starts.

In writing03
Signed & guaranteed

The number lands in writing with a one-year workmanship warranty. If it isn’t right, we make it right.

The breakdown

What moves the number.

No mystery math. Four things decide what tree work costs, and we walk every one with you before the quote lands.

Size & spreadHeight, trunk diameter and how wide the crown reaches. A backyard dogwood and a century oak are not the same afternoon.
Access & drop zoneHow close a chipper and truck can get, and how much open ground there is to work over. Tight lots take longer.
Rigging & what’s belowA tree over open lawn comes down fast. One over a roof, a fence or power lines is roped down piece by piece.
Cleanup & haul-awayWhether wood stays bucked for firewood or leaves entirely, plus chips and stump. How much goes shapes the day.

Whatever the mix, you get one clear quote, in writing, before any work starts.

What a serious tree-work quote includes, ours or anyone’s:
  • The scope limb by limb, not “trim the tree”
  • Liability and workers’ comp, named on paper
  • Stump: ground out or left, stated
  • Wood & chips: hauled, stacked or yours, stated
  • Cleanup promise, same day, in writing
  • A work window you can plan around
Tree work is the most dangerous trade in the yard. The insurance line is not paperwork, it’s what stands between an accident and your homeowner’s policy.

Recent jobs

Real work, in plain numbers.

Three jobs from the past few months, what they were, where, and how long they actually took.

Big-leaf maple, crown thinned
Laurelhurst·1 day

Climbed and selectively thinned a mature big-leaf maple, no more than a fifth of the live canopy off, all reduction cuts back to lateral leaders. Deadwood pulled and the two roof-rubbing limbs end-weight reduced, chipped on site.

Hazard fir removal, rigged out
Irvington·2 days

Took down a 90-foot Douglas fir wedged between the house and the neighbor's garage. Every piece speedline-rigged and lowered to a tight drop zone, no crane access, then the stump ground 14 inches below grade and the bed backfilled.

Storm limb, made safe
Sellwood·3 hours

Same-day call on a cracked scaffold limb hung up over the driveway after a windstorm. Set a rigging line, lowered the limb in two picks, then cabled the remaining co-dominant union with a dynamic Cobra brace to hold it through the season.

Where we work

Proudly serving the Portland metro

A lot of our work comes from a neighbor who watched us prune the house next door. If you're in the metro, we're just around the corner.

Around here it’s winter windstorms on saturated ground that bring trees down — the reason fall structure-checks and storm-thinning book out fast, and why we look at roots, not just branches.

How it goes

From first call to done.

No mystery in the middle. This is the path the job actually takes, start to finish.

01
The tree walkday 1

An ISA Certified Arborist comes out, walks the property with you, and puts hands on every tree in the scope. We check for deadwood, weak unions, targets below, and access for the bucket or a climb, and we tell you straight what needs doing now versus what can wait.

02
Quote lands in writingwithin 48 hours

You get a clear quote by email, itemized tree by tree, so you know what each cut and each haul costs. It spells out crew size, gear, cleanup, and where the wood and chips go, with no day-of surprises.

03
Job gets scheduled1-3 weeks out

We lock a date that suits you and pull any permit or arborist report the city needs first. You get a heads-up call the day before so you can move cars, unlock gates, and keep pets inside.

04
Day of the workday of the job

The climbers and ground crew arrive on time, rope off the drop zone, and take the tree down in controlled pieces so nothing lands on fences, roofs, or beds. A foreman stays on site the whole day and checks in with you before any judgment call.

05
Walk-through and cleanupbefore we leave

We rake the yard, blow the chips off your walks, and haul the debris, then walk the finished job with you so you sign off with your own eyes. You leave with the written warranty on our cuts and pruning in hand, and we do not pull out until you are satisfied.

Before you hire anyone

Five questions for every tree crew.

Including us. Tree work is the most dangerous trade that visits your home, these five questions are how you protect your tree, your roof and yourself.

01Can I see liability and workers’ comp certificates?

If a crew member is hurt and there’s no workers’ comp, your homeowner’s policy is next in line. A pro sends both certificates without flinching.

02Will you climb my tree with spikes?

Spikes belong on removals only. Every spike hole in a living tree is a wound, a keeper tree gets climbed on ropes or reached by lift.

03What exactly comes off, and how much?

Listen for percentages and named limbs, not “we’ll clean it up”. And if anyone says “topping”, that’s not pruning, that’s how trees get ruined.

04Who cleans up, and where does the wood go?

Hauled, chipped, stacked for firewood, your choice, but it should be stated before the first cut, not negotiated after.

05Who is making the health call on this tree?

Removal quotes are easy, diagnosis is the skill. Ask who assessed the tree and what they looked at, roots to crown, before the saw came up.

Bring this list to the estimate. We’ll answer all five before you ask.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Getting started
Do you charge for estimates?+
No. Written estimates for pruning, removals, storm work and reports are always free, we visit, assess every tree, talk through the work, and email you a clear, itemized quote with no obligation.
How soon can you start?+
Most estimates go out within a day, and typical projects are scheduled within one to two weeks. For urgent jobs, before a move, a sale or an event, just tell us the date and we'll do our best to fit you in.
What does “free estimates” mean?+
Before any work begins, we give you one clear quote to approve, prep, materials and labor included. No hourly meter, no surprise add-ons at the end. You always decide before we start.
What should I do before the crew arrives?+
Move cars from under the work zone and keep pets inside, that is all. We walk the drop zones with you first, and everything else is our rigging problem, not yours.
Are you insured for tree work specifically?+
Fully, and that distinction matters: general liability that covers work at height and rigging, plus workers comp for climbers. Certificates land in your inbox before we start.
How do you price tree work?+
Size, complexity, rigging and haul-away, one clear quote in writing after the free assessment. No hourly meter running while chainsaws warm up.
Can you give a price over the phone?+
A range from photos, honestly framed. The quote needs eyes on the tree, that assessment is free and usually same-week.
The trees & the work
Do you climb or use a bucket truck?+
Whatever the tree and access ask for. Climbing spares lawns and reaches where trucks cannot, buckets speed up roadside work. Spikes never touch a tree we are not removing.
What happens to the wood and chips?+
Your call: bucked to firewood length and stacked, or hauled away entirely. Chips are free mulch if you want them, gone if you do not.
What actually happens during the assessment?+
An arborist reads the tree: deadwood, unions, lean, root flare, soil. You get the honest verdict, prune, support, monitor or remove, with one price per option.
Which trees suit my property?+
Tap through the Canopy Studio above for the mood each species casts, then ask during the assessment, right tree, right place is free advice we give happily.
Storms, safety & the Care Plan
Why do some trees fail in storms?+
Included bark unions, over-lifted crowns that catch wind like sails, and roots cut by construction years earlier. Most failures were predictable, which is the argument for assessments.
Do I need a permit to remove my tree?+
In Portland, often yes, size and species decide. We know the thresholds, handle the paperwork and write the supporting report when the city wants one.
How fast can you come after a storm?+
Hazards jump every queue, usually same-day. Members of the Canopy Care Plan hold the front of that line.
Can you work near power lines?+
We prune to the utility clearance rules and know exactly where our scope ends and the utility's begins. Anything inside their zone gets coordinated, not improvised.
Will my lawn survive the removal?+
Yes. Mats under machines, plywood under drop zones, and a rake-out that leaves the lawn arguing the tree was never there.
Is the Care Plan worth it?+
For most homes, yes: an annual inspection, free scuff and touch-up visits, priority scheduling, and 15% off future projects typically pay for the membership the first time you use it, and keep every finish looking new.
